CLOSEResearch Grants awarded to the National Hellenic Research Foundation for the implementation of three research projects in the Aegean
The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) announces the receipt of three grants for three significant research projects of the Institute of Historical Research, funded by the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy. These projects are part of the broader effort to promote scientific research and cultural heritage in the island regions of Tenos, Kasos, Karpathos, and Kimolos.
1. Byzantine and Latin-dominated Tenos: Old and new archaeological data

Location: Tenos
Grant: €8,000
The project is conducted by the Institute of Historical Research and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades. The research aims to highlight and advance the understanding of the history of Tenos during the Byzantine era and the period of Latin rule (4th–early 18th c.) through systematic excavations at the castle of Xombourgo and around the church of Agia Anastasia at the ‘Rentia’ site, as well as the recording and documentation of selected monuments and movable finds on the island. For 2026, the project focuses on the study and documentation of the material yielded by the 2024 and 2025 excavations at the two aforementioned sites, as well as the analysis of selected findings. On behalf of the Institute of Historical Research, the project is led by Anastasia G. Yangaki, Research Director and Coordinator of the Section of Byzantine Research at IHR/NHRF.

2. Underwater Archaeological Research in Kasos and Karpathos
Location: Karpathos
Grant: €8,000
In 2026, the underwater research focuses on the identification, study, and documentation of submerged cultural heritage in the marine area of Karpathos, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities. The project aims to apply innovative methods for mapping ancient maritime routes and revealing new historical evidence. The scientific coordinator of the project is Nikolaos Papazarkadas, Director of IHR/NHRF, while the field research is directed by Xanthie Argiris, research associate at IHR/NHRF.

3. Defining Ancient Coastlines in Kimolos and Melos

Location: Kimolos, Melos
Grant: €8,000
In 2026, this geoarchaeological project focuses on the changes in the coastal landscape of Melos Island driven by sea-level rise and tectonic deformations. It aims at the coastal geomorphological evolution and palaeogeographic shoreline reconstruction of across three archaeologically important locations spanning a broad chronological range: the Bronze Age site of Phylakopi, the Archaic-Classical harbour-city at Klima, and the Roman harbour installations in Pollonia. The research, which is conducted under the permission of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, seeks to identify historical coastscape transformations and harbour infrastructures that shaped navigation patterns in the Southern Cyclades. The scientific coordinator of the project is Nikolaos Papazarkadas, Director of IHR/NHRF, while the field research is directed by Eleni Kolaiti, research associate at IHR/NHRF.
The National Hellenic Research Foundation expresses its gratitude to the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy for its continuous support of research and the preservation of Aegean cultural heritage. These grants play a crucial role in safeguarding and scientifically showcasing the history of the Greek islands.
