Signing of a Programme Agreement between the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) and the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” for the project “Scientific Investigation and Reconstruction of the Original Polychromy of the Kasta Tumulus Funerary Monument at Ancient Amphipolis– AmphiPoly”

On Wednesday, 10 December, a Programme Agreement was signed at the premises of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture between the Minister of Culture, the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), and the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR Demokritos), concerning the project “Study and Enhancement of the Polychromy of the Funerary Monument of the Kasta Tumulus in Ancient Amphipolis – AmphiPoly”.

The Programme Agreement was signed by the Minister of Culture, Ms Lina Mendoni, the President of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Professor Demosthenes Sarigiannis, and the Chairman of the Board and Director of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Mr Evangelos Karkaletsis.

The project comprises Subproject 1, to be implemented by the NHRF, under the scientific supervision of Hariclia Brecoulaki, Principal Researcher at the Institute of Historical Research, and focuses on the study and enhancement of the polychromy of the entire painted, architectural, and sculptural decoration of the Macedonian Kasta Tomb. Subproject 2 will be implemented by NCSR “Demokritos”, under the scientific supervision of Andreas Karydas, Research Director at the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics, and concerns the spectroscopic analysis of selected movable and immovable monuments, as well as the dating of organic materials and mortars from the Kasta Tomb.

Researchers from the Institute of Historical Research, scientific collaborators of the Institute, and specialist teams in archaeometry and digital applications (Archeovision, Factum Arte Foundation) will contribute to Subproject 1.

The total budget of the project amounts to €661,492.88, while the budget allocated to Subproject 1, to be implemented by the NHRF/IHR, amounts to €407,836.00.
