CLOSECO2-BioProducts
Bioconversion of CO2 into High-added Value Bioproducts through Sustainable Microalgae Cultivation Processes
Microalgal biomass is a primary renewable resource to produce multiple bioproducts, within the operational framework of a third generation biorefinery. This approach can have a large positive environmental impact, if it will be combined with the sequestration and conversion of significant amounts of CO2 from industrial flue gases. However, presently, significant technological and economic barriers, as well as the lack of systematic knowledge on the individual production stages, prevent their sustainable operation at an economically viable industrial scale. In this context, the central objective of the CO2-BioProducts project is to produce high-added value bioproducts through the bioconversion of available -from power generation plants- CO2, using microalgae. The proposed technology will be developed to recover, from the produced biomass, valuable bioactive compounds (phycocyanin, carotene, vitamins) that can meet applications as cosmeceutical products and high nutritional ingredients, as well as, to fully exploit the residual biomass (fractions rich in proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids) as animal feed additive.
