Open Science is a critical priority for the European Union (EU) for sustainable development, better production and utilization of research results, collaboration, and the democratization of knowledge.
Supporting Open Science policies, the NHRF works systematically towards the adoption of a new research environment where scientific knowledge (code, data, ideas, information, scientific results and publications, etc.) and certain research infrastructures are open for use by the wider scientific community.
The NHRF is a founding member of the National Initiative for Open Science (EPAE), in which the country’s research centers participate in collaboration with EDUTE, the Open Technologies Organisation EEL/LAK and the Association of Greek Academic Libraries (SEAB), with the aim of representing the country at the (EOSC) and all its related bodies and actions, and on the other hand, to formulate the National Plan for Open Science in Greece, with the aim of coordinating and participating in the implementation of Open Science policies in Greece.
Since 2022, the NHRF’s Open Science and Research Data Committee has been established and is operational, which actively contributes to the design and adoption of actions for the fuller integration of Open Science principles into the Foundation and the utilization of tools that support the wider scientific community in this field.
The NHRF Open Science and Research Data Committee consists of the following members:
- Dr. Evangelia Chrysina (President)
- Dr. Nektarios Lathiotakis, TPCI
- Dr. Dimitra Mitsiou, ICB
- Dr. Paschalis Paschidis, IHR
- Dr. Asterios Pispas, TPCI
It is important to note that the “K.Th. Dimaras” Library of the NHRF promotes the adoption of Open Science as its central policy, provides open access to scientific content through the institutional repository Helios, and participates in the NHRF’s Open Science and Research Data Committee. In particular, the Library’s staff:
- provide information to the NHRF research community on Open Science and the possibility of publishing scientific papers under Open Access,
- contribute to identifying the needs of NHRF researchers for Open Research Data,
- participate in initiatives of the European Commission and the Association of Greek Academic Libraries on Open Science.
The digital Institutional Repository of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), “Helios,” collects, documents, and provides open access to the multidisciplinary research output of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, and technical sciences. The “Helios” repository contains publications in international scientific journals, research data, conference announcements and proceedings, monographs, dissertations, patents, lectures, as well as multimedia and educational material.
In addition, the content of the NHRF website and the individual websites of research projects is open for use for research and educational purposes, in accordance with the applicable institutional framework on intellectual property rights.
