Dimosthenis Sarigiannis is Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. He is also Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Environmental Engineering Laboratory and the Laboratory of General Chemical Technology of the Department of Chemical Engineering and of the Research Structure for Exposure and Health at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. In addition, he is Associate Professor of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IUSS) and Director of the Research Centre for Complex Risk and Data Analysis in Pavia, Italy and member of the coordination team of the national PhD program on Sustainable Development and Climate at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IUSS) in Pavia, Italy and visiting professor at the University of Paris.
He is President of the Mediterranean Scientific Association for the Protection of the Environment, Vice President of the Hellenic Society of Toxicology, member of the Committee of Experts on Atmospheric Pollution of the Ministry of Health of Greece and advisor to the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health.
For his work on the safety of chemicals and pharmaceuticals he has been awarded the Bo Holmstedt Prize in 2015 by the European Society of Toxicology and the Bo Holmstedt Foundation.
His research focuses on:
(a) in human exposure and improving the assessment of health risks from industrial and environmental toxicants, and in the assessment of the impacts of climate change and climate change adaptation and mitigation policies; and
(b) integrating health aspects into circular economy strategies to implement safe and sustainable design approaches for chemicals, materials and products.
He is author or co-author of more than 200 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and 28 chapters in international books and monographs, and has led or contributed to 45 international research projects in the above areas.
