Dr. George Bonas
Born in Athens in 1960, married with two children

Education

1979 - 1988 Studies of Chemistry at the 'Josef Fourier' University of Grenoble, France.
PhD in Chemistry in March 1988.

Professional experience

1997 - present
At the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (the Greek institution in charge of the policy and administration of RTD), on leave from the National Hellenic Research Foundation - Institute of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

Responsible for the cooperation with the Balkan, Black Sea and Mediterranean Partner countries. In particular:
      - In charge of the preparation and adoption of the 'EU - Balkan countries Action Plan in Science and Technology'. The Action Plan has been finally adopted at Ministerial level in June 2003.
      - Member of the Monitoring Committee for the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in S&T (since 1997).
      - Member of the two ad-hoc groups that ensure the implementation of activities and the follow-up of the decisions concerning the above Balkan and Mediterranean issues.
      - Member of the Working Group on Science and Technology of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation.
      - Deputy National delegate at the FP6 Committee on 'Nanotechnologies' and Expert for International Cooperation in S&T in the Committee on 'Horizontal Issues' (SP1).

In addition:
      - In charge of the bilateral cooperation in Science and Technology between Greece and France. In charge for of the cooperation with the Russian Federation, the Czech and the Slovak Republic in previous years.
      - Greek delegate at the Committee of Senior Officials of the COST programme.
      - Coordinator of the panel in charge of the Nanotechnology during the evaluation of the Greek Research Centers and Institutes (2001) and evaluator of European, Bilateral and National research projects.

1996
Scientific Officer at the European Commission, DG Research, Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme.
Responsible for the scientific and administrative follow-up of projects dealing with food and water analysis, as well as, projects aiming at the Certification of Reference Materials ('BCR' Certified Reference Materials).

1991 - 1995 (and currently, on a part time basis)
Researcher at the National Hellenic Research Foundation - Institute of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
Responsible for the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance laboratory and coordinator of projects dealing with the authentication of olive oil.
Member of the EU panel (1997 - 2002) for the scientific evaluation of the candidate Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). Development of software to be used for the data handling and statistical analysis in view of the certification of new CRMs. The software has been adopted recently as the official software for this purpose. Member of the panel that issued the new 'Guidelines' for the Certification of Reference Materials (recently published as EUR report).
Member of the Certification Advisory Panel in charge of the Certification of Reference Materials at the Institute of Reference Material and Measurements - IRMM/JRC/European Commission (since December 2004 for a 3 years term).

1989 - 1991
Employed as Marine Chemist in a private company specialized in the inspection of ships to certify their 'gas free' condition.

Publications - Presentations
Author of 16 papers in journals and of several presentations in scientific congresses.
Since 1997, invited speaker in several events dealing with International Cooperation in Science.

Languages: Mother tongue: Greek
Very good knowledge of French and English.

Memberships and positions
      -Member of the Board of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute (2002 - 2004).
      -Advisor on S&T issues of the International Center for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS).
      -Member of the Associations of the Greek Chemists and of the Greek Marine Chemists.

Honour
Holder of the 'Palmes Academiques' medal of the French Government for the contribution in the Greek - French Scientific and Technological cooperation.
