The Hermoupolis Seminars: "History, public discourse and historians. Press and the internet" (2014)

The Hermoupolis Seminars, an institution founded by Vassilis Panagiotopoulos in 1985, have since hosted—during the first fortnight of July—more than 3,000 scholars from the sciences and the humanities, as well as writers and artists from Greece and abroad. The island of Syros, and the town of Hermoupolis with its rich historical legacy and intellectual tradition, have provided an ideal setting for the Seminars.

The Hermoupolis Seminars include lecture series, summer schools, workshops, and small conferences. They also offer opportunities for doctoral candidates to participate in research workshops.

In addition to fostering historical research, which has been a core focus from the beginning, the Seminars have consistently promoted interdisciplinary dialogue and the exchange of ideas among related fields within the humanities. From the outset, they have sought to serve as a vibrant forum for the generation and circulation of scholarly ideas, in a welcoming and intellectually stimulating environment—free from the constraints and formalities that often characterize academic events in major urban centers.
