Culture and Ideology

The “Ideas and Culture” cluster of the Section of Neohellenic Research largely echoes the scientific directions of the former Institute of Neohellenic Research and C. Th. Dimaras’ legacy. This includes projects on the history of culture and the history of ideas, as well as the study of Modern Greek literature as a historical source. With a view to the history of ideas and culture from a European, Balkan, and more generally supranational perspective, the projects also focus on the history of books and libraries, the study of languages in the Balkan region, the history of scholars and the humanities, the history of religious art, and photography. The history of sciences, a significant field internationally, is linked in many ways to the history of ideas, the relationship between religion and technology, and Greece’s position in Europe. The study of historiography is certainly a special field in this cluster.
