CLOSEInscripti(Ottoma)ns: Corpus of Ottoman Inscriptions in Greece
Elias Kolovos
The project aspires to initiate the systematic and exemplary publication, in English, of collections of Ottoman inscriptions in Greece. These inscriptions are preserved both in situ and under the responsibility of the Ephorates of Antiquities, and primarily include dedicatory inscriptions and Muslim funerary stelae.
The scientific advisors (consultants) of the project are specialists in Ottoman epigraphy: Dr. Giorgos Liakopoulos (Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology), Dimitris Loupis (independent researcher), and Dr. Mohammad Shariat-Panahi (University of Thessaly).
The project also aims to produce a digital edition of the material, employing best practices in the field, as part of the broader strategy of the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation to develop a digitally accessible, internationally-oriented repository for the documentation of history.
According to a special Protocol of Cooperation with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Dodecanese, Research Director Elias Kolovos, on behalf of the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, undertakes the recording, translation, documentation, digitisation, study, and publication of the Ottoman and other inscriptions in Arabic script found in the city and island of Rhodes (corpus). The goal is the gradual print publication of the epigraphic material.
