CLOSEHistory, philosophy and didactics of science and technology
Kostas Tampakis, Efthymios Nikolaidis

The objective of the Programme is the study of the history of science and technology in the Greek world from Late Antiquity to the present day, the history of the relationship between science and religion, as well as the interaction between history of science and philosophy and didactics of the natural sciences.
The Programme’s research team has completed 17 research projects in collaboration with Greek and European partners. It has curated the collections of a Science Museum, and organised a major scientific exhibition on the Antikythera Mechanism, which has been presented in eight countries abroad (including various European countries and China).
The Programme has organised more than 60 symposia, conferences, and workshops, as well as a regular summer seminar. Information on these events is available on the Programme’s main website, as well as on the websites of specific projects such as Dacalbo, Narses , and SOW.
The Programme has established a significant international network, having signed bilateral collaboration agreements with eight institutions in European countries and three in China. It participates in joint research initiatives with other foreign research institutions and coordinates a network dedicated to the history of science in Southeastern Europe.
The Programme has developed a central website (www.hpdst.gr), which provides access to all project websites. It has also created a digital museum of scientific instruments (http://www.hasi.gr), along with three open-access databases:
- A database on Greek alchemy: http://dacalbo.hpdst.gr/archive/search
- A database of Greek sources concerning the relationship between science and religion from the 4th to the 20th century: http://narses.hpdst.gr/resources/content
- A multilingual database (in ten languages) of sources relating to the relationship between science and Orthodox Christianity: http://k2.altsol.gr/archive/search
The metadata for all these databases are available in English.
