The Hunt Frieze of Tomb II at Vergina, Greece: A Novel Interdisciplinary Approach for the Scientific Investigation and Revisualization of a Painted Masterpiece of the Classical World
This project undertakes a non-invasive, interdisciplinary investigation of the fresco depicting a hunting scene that adorns the frieze on the façade of the tomb of Philip II.
It is carried out by the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, in collaboration with the XRF Laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos,” and with the support of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia under the Ministry of Culture.
The research applies advanced analytical and imaging techniques with the aim of identifying the pigments and painting techniques used in the creation of the fresco. It also seeks to reveal iconographic details that are no longer visible to the naked eye due to the deterioration of the painted surface over time.
The ReVis project underscores the value of interdisciplinary approaches and explores the role of technology in deepening our understanding of one of the most important surviving works of ancient painting.
