The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) invites expressions of interest from researchers wishing to apply for the “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions – Postdoctoral Fellowship” Programme of the European Commission. Successful candidates will undertake a research stay of 12 to 24 months in Athens, Greece, fully funded by the Programme. During this period, fellows will be hosted in the premises of the Institute at Athens and supervised by a member of the Institute’s research staff. We welcome proposals within our core thematic areas, encompassing Ancient Greek and Roman Studies, Byzantine and Latin Dominions Studies, and Modern Greek and Ottoman Studies.
Applying for the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation offers candidates access to a premier interdisciplinary academic environment in the heart of Athens. Fellows benefit from direct access to extensive archival and bibliographic resources, as well as to the rich cultural heritage and monuments of Athens and Greece more broadly. The IHR/NHRF, which already hosts an MSCA fellow, provides outstanding research infrastructure, including the K.Th. Dimaras Library and a specialized scholarly collection of over 55,000 volumes, featuring the renowned D.A. Zakythinos collection in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. In addition, candidates become part of a vibrant academic community of historians and archaeologists, while receiving comprehensive administrative support throughout all stages of the fellowship, from the initial proposal preparation to the implementation of the research project. Applicants may be of any nationality; however, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Greece for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately preceding the official call deadline. Additionally, in accordance with standard MSCA guidelines, candidates must be in possession of a doctoral degree and have a maximum of eight years of full-time equivalent research experience at the time of the deadline. The fellowship provides a highly competitive funding package that includes living, mobility, and family allowances, as well as comprehensive coverage for research, training, and networking costs.
Prospective applicants should contact a permanent researcher within the Institute of Historical Research as early as possible to inquire if they are willing to act as a supervisor for the fellowship. All Expressions of Interest must have the explicit agreement and confirmed support of an IHR supervisor in the thematic area where you wish to be based. If you want your Expression of Interest to be considered by more than one thematic area within the Institute, you must secure the agreement and confirmed support from a supervisor in each respective field. To initiate the internal review process, applicants should submit a brief CV and a one-page research outline to the respective contact person by 15 May 2026.
