Archival Attic Epigraphy: New Evidence in the archive of Stephanos A.Koumanoudes at the National Library of Greece
The proposed project focuses on the study and publication of unpublished Attic inscriptions that have been recently discovered in the National Library of Greece during my study on the archival papers of Stephanos A. Koumanoudes (1818-1899), one of the most eminent epigraphists of the 19th century. The rich and very important archive of Koumanoudes, which is held in the National Library, covers the whole range of his research interests and activities. Over the years, researchers of the modern Greek history and literature have made extensive use of it. However, the same does not apply to Koumanoudes’ archival papers on the inscriptions. I had the opportunity through a fellowship (2022-2023) funded by the Center of Hellenic Studies (Harvard University) to produce a complete catalogue of his epigraphic papers, which consist of copies of inscriptions (mainly his own, but also those sent to him by other, often old students), squeezes and his own epigraphic notes. During my research, I discovered 70 unpublished new Attic inscriptions as well as 16 new readings of S.A.Koumanoudes on published inscriptions, which however he did not publish. The new epigraphic evidence covers a wide chronological range (from the Archaic to Roman periods). In the framework of the research project, five actions are planned for the dissemination of the new research findings and for ensuring an open dialogue with the academic community:
(1) three articles in peer-reviewed international journals, (2) the development of a project’s website which will provide updates on the research’s progress; (3) the organisation of an international conference at the Host Institution (Institute of Historical Research / National Hellenic Research Foundation (IHR/NHRF); (4) the openaccess publication of the conference proceedings in the form of an edited volume; (5) the participation in conferences, workshops and seminars in Greece and abroad.
