Beyond the production of high-quality research, one of the declared aims of the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) is the training of pupils, students, teachers, and young scholars, as well as the dissemination of the historical research produced within the National Hellenic Research Foundation for the benefit of both the scholarly community and society at large. In this direction, the IHR has long undertaken a wide range of educational initiatives—postgraduate programs in collaboration with universities, summer schools, tutorials, training seminars, etc.—and regularly organizes, either independently or in cooperation with other research institutions, numerous academic events, ranging from lectures and workshops to symposia and conferences. In this context, the Section of Byzantine Research has been organizing the Historical Sciences Seminar since 1987, which is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students and doctoral candidates, as well as individuals with related interests, co-organizes with the Department of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Seminar “Nikos Oikonomides”, participates in educational activities aimed at elementary and secondary schools, and has so far organized two Summer Schools on Greek Paleography and Byzantine Epigraphy. At the same time, the Section organizes the annual series of monthly lectures “Byzantine Studies Lectures”, the “Byzantine Meetings” workshop, in collaboration with the French School of Athens and Haoma UMR 5189 (CNRS), and numerous other scientific conferences, symposia, and lectures.
