A3. ACTS AND OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS OF THE PATRIARCHATE OF CONSTANTINOPLE
(Dimitris Apostolopoulos, Panagiotis Michailaris, Machi Paizi, Julie Evangelou)

This documentation project aims to track down and record all the acts and official documents issued by the Patriarchate of Constantinople: the decisions of the patriarch and the Holy Synod, sigillia and letters addressed to collective entities or individuals (monasteries, parochial churches, bishoprics, officials, the laity). Apart from the extant patriarchal acts, the project also records those that are known to have been issued but their text is only partially preserved or missing.

Other than the creation of a reliable and rich database (where more than 7000 patriarchal acts have already been recorded), namely of an invaluable serial source, the documentation project aims to provide evidence that will enable historians to study the multi-faceted aspects of Neohellenic society; a society which, in the Post-Byzantine period, continued to live within the framework of the Ottoman Empire and used the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the ecclesiastical institution which was legitimised by the Conqueror, as a field of political expression and activity.
