Material Synthesis and Physical Chemistry

Nanostructured biomaterials

The research on development and Physical Chemistry of Biomaterials within the Materials Synthesis and Physical Chemistry program, at the Theoretical and Physical Chemistry Institute, is coordinated by Dr. Aristeidis Papagiannopoulos. The development of nanostructured biomaterials focusses on nanostructures that are based on biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins. Biocompatible, ecofriendly and innovative protocols are established for the preparation of nanoparticles, hydrogels, thin films and complex fluids. These materials have great potential in biomedical and food sciences. The advanced physicochemical characterization and optimization of the new biomaterials are performed by advanced experimental methods that include using large scale facilities, developing inhouse instrumentation and writing software for data acquisition and analysis.
