The project is carried out in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, with the participation of D. Athanasoulis (Director), M. Sigala, and Ch. Sakellakou. Its aim is to investigate aspects of the historical geography of the island of Tenos through the recording and documentation of selected monuments and movable finds dating from the Byzantine period to the era of Latin rule, spanning from the 4th to the early 18th century.

The project focuses on two main avenues: a) the identification, recording, and documentation of monuments and movable finds; and b) the implementation of systematic archaeological excavations in areas of particular interest. The collaboration seeks to: shed light on early Byzantine habitation on the island through the study of finds from rescue excavations in Chora and through a new systematic excavation at the church of Agia Anastasia in the area of “Rentia”; investigate aspects of Middle Byzantine architecture and sculpture through the analysis of ecclesiastical structures and architectural members; explore patterns of settlement and daily life within the island’s medieval centre, the castle of Xombourgo, during the period of Latin rule, alongside excavation of underlying Byzantine remains. To support the project’s aims, a dedicated website has been developed, which hosts both relevant information and a digital management system for processing and presenting excavation and field data. Related publications are being produced in the course of the research.
