NHRF receives funding of €30,7 from RRF
NHRF will be funded by the RRF with €30,7 for the establishment of a Center of Excellence which will focus on Theranostics and bioelectronic applications. The funding is expected to further enhance the research capacity of the NHRF as well as its contribution to core areas of science and technology.

The collaboration between the NHRF and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) will be extended for two more years, in the framework of the Athens Comprehensive Cancer Center (ACCC)
The collaboration of the NHRF with the leading German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) will be extended for two more years, in the framework of the Athens Comprehensive Cancer Center (ACCC) project. The extension is a result of the successful interim evaluation conducted by a committee of experts of Helmholtz Association.

Completion of the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940
As part of the research project “Database of German military and paramilitary units in Greece 1941-1944/45” and within the framework of an international collaboration between the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), the University of Osnabrück and the Greek National Center for Social Research (EKKE), the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940 is now being created.

Intercalation phenomena in kaolinite: New insights by vibrational spectroscopy
The postgraduate study of Ms. Fevronia Andreou was implemented in the TPCI/NHRF (under the supervision of G. Chryssikos), in the framework of the collaboration of the TPCI and the Interinstitutional Postgraduate Program "Microsystems and Nanostructures" of the National Technical University of Athens.

Prostate Cancer Biomarkers: From diagnosis to prognosis and precision-guided therapeutics (Review)
The researcher of the ICB/NHRF V. Zoumpourlis and his colleague, Postdoc M. Adamaki, published the aforementioned review in the Pharmacology & Therapeutics journal.

Effective DNA damage response after acute but not chronic immune challenge: SARS-CoV-2 vaccine versus Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
The aforementioned study was recently published in the scientific journal Clinical Immunology by Dr. Vasilis Souliotis, ICB/NHRF, in collaboration with Professor of Pathology and Rheumatology of the School of Medicine (University of Athens), Petros Sfikakis.

New edition of the IHR/NHRF, "Entangled histories and collective identity: Narratives of the Chios massacre (1822)", by Maria Christina Chatziioannou
The Chios Massacre in 1822 constitutes a major historiographical challenge; it was a sudden and brief incident within the span of the Greek Revolution that attracted the attention of philhellenes throughout the world, as well as the involvement of various institutions.

New edition of the IHR/NHRF, Ceramics in plain sight: The bacini of the churches of Crete. "Reflections" of the late medieval and the early modern material culture of the island, Volume Ι, The Regional Unit of Chania, by Anastasia G. Yangaki
The volume presents the immured glazed vessels (the bacini) located on the façades of numerous churches in the regional unit of Chania. It comprises the first part of a larger project which will gather similar data from the other regions of Crete.

First Regional Structural Biology Meeting for Balkans and South East Mediterranean area
On May 14th, the ICB/NHRF, in collaboration with the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Instruct-ERIC organized an online meeting entitled "First Regional Structural Biology Meeting for Balkans and South East Mediterranean area", in the framework of the research project iNEXT-Discovery, funded by the European Union. Incorporation of Peltier coolers on perovskite solar cells
Dr. Andreas Kaltzoglou, Associate Researcher of the TPCI/NHRF, was invited as speaker at the international conference Nanotexnology2021 held on 3-10 July 2021 in Thessaloniki. The title of the lecture was: "Incorporation of Peltier coolers on perovskite solar cells”, written by D. N. Kossyvakis, E. Christopoulos, V. Raptis, E. V. Christoforou, P. Falaras, A. Kaltzoglou.

The funded project of the TPCI/NHRF entitled "Chemically modified MoS2 with organic recognition motifs as electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of ions and (bio)molecules” was successfully completed
The funded project of the TPCI/NHRF entitled "Chemically modified MoS2 with organic recognition motifs as electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of ions and (bio)molecules” was successfully completed on June 30th by the post-doctoral researchers Dr. Anastasios Stergiou and Dr. Christina Stangel, in collaboration with the Research Director, Dr. Nikos Tagmatarchis.

The DNA damage response network in the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Dr. Vassilis Souliotis (ICB/NHRF), in collaboration with the professor of Oncology of the Medical School of the University of Athens Amanda Psyrri (Oncology Unit of the University Hospital "Attikon"), recently published the above work in the scientific journal ESMO Open.

Senolytics and senomorphics: Natural and synthetic therapeutics in the treatment of aging and chronic diseases
Dr. Niki Chondrogianni (ICB/NHRF), with the doctoral candidate Sofia Lagoumtzi, published the above review in the prestigious journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine (Lagoumtzi and Chondrogianni, Free Radic Biol Med. 2021, May 12; 171: 169-190).

One-step separation system of bio-functional lipid compounds from natural sources
The Researcher Emeritus Dr. Theodoros Sotiroudis (ICB/NHRF) participates in the publication in the journal MethodsX, in collaboration with the University of Limerick, Ireland (Dr. Alexandros Tsoupras) and the departments of Biology (Assoc. Prof. Katherine M. Pappas) and Chemistry (Prof. Emeritus Constantinos A. Demopoulos) of NKUA.

Temperature effects on the vibrational properties of the Cs2SnX6 ‘defect’ perovskites (X = I, Br, Cl)
The Associate Researcher of the TPCI/NHRF Dr. Andreas Kaltzoglou is co-author of the above publication in the international journal of the field of materials synthesis and physical chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Physics, in collaboration with NCSR "Demokritos", the Department of Physics of the University of Athens and the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens.

Reversible multilayered vesicle-like structures with fluid hydrophobic and interpolyelectrolyte lay
Dr. Athanasios Skandalis (former PhD candidate at TPCI/NHRF and current Postdoctoral Fellow at Imperial College London) and the Research Director of TPCI/NHRF Dr. Asterios (Stergios) Pispas are co-authors of the aforementioned publication in the prestigious International Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. The publication is a result of the international collaboration of the TPCI/NHRF with: the Charles University and the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of Prague, the Julich Centre for Neutron Scattering@MLZ and the Abo Academi University.

New publication by the IHR/NHRF entitled Byzantine Authors and their Times [Research Series 8], Athens 2021, edited by Vassiliki Ν. Vlyssidou
In the present volume, historians and literacy scholars, studying sources dating from the 5th to the 14th century and focusing on issues relating to literary expression, ideology and society, highlight the ways in which Byzantine authors perceived and presented events and situations, which for some belonged to the distant past, while for others constituted personal experiences.

Loss of Research Drector Evgenia Drakopoulou (IHR/NHRF)

Colloidal nanodispersions for the topical delivery of Ibuprofen: Structure, dynamics and bioperformances
Dr. I. Theochari, Dr. E. Mitsou, Dr. V. Pletsa, Dr. A. Xenakis and Dr. V. Papadimitriou from ICB/NHRF, in collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Cosmetology and Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Belgrade, published the above article in the international Journal of Molecular Liquids, 334, 2021, 116021.

The brominated flame retardants TBECH and DPTE alter prostate growth, histology and gene expression patterns in the mouse
M. N. Alexis, D. Mitsiou and their colleague S. Stasinopoulou (ICB/NHRF), in collaboration with Prof. Per-Erik Olsson's team, participate in the above-mentioned study published in the Reproductive Toxicology journal.

Modulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system by marine natural products
Dr. Chondrogianni along with M. Vasilopoulou, Ph.D. candidate, participated in this publication in the prestigious journal Redox Biology, in collaboration with Assistant Professor E. Ioannou and Professor V. Roussis of the Department of Pharmacy of NKUA.

Network analysis in aged C. elegans reveals candidate regulatory genes of ageing
Dr. N. Chondrogianni from the ICB/NHRF, along with the scientific colleague F. Aktypi and Dr. N. Papaevgeniou, in collaboration with Mr. K. Voutetakis and Dr. A. Chatziioannou and Dr. T. Grune participated in the scientific paper, published in the prestigious journal Biogerontology.

Unveiling the Photoinduced Electron-Donating Character of MoS2 in Covalently Linked Hybrids Featuring Perylenediimide
I. Sideri, Doctoral Candidate, and Dr. Nikos Tagmatarchis, Director of the TPCI/NHRF, are co-authors of the aforementioned publication in the leading international journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition 2021.

International Digital Conference "Performance in Late Antiquity and Byzantium"
The conference "Performance in Late Antiquity and Byzantium" held by the Institute of Historical Research (IHR/NHRF) marked the end of the first phase of the homonymous research project. It was conducted in collaboration with Hellenic Studies Center Harvard University (Washington DC), the Institute of Classical Studies and Liberal Arts of the American College of Greece, GKAcademics (Madrid) and implemented with the kind support of the Center for Hellenic Studies-Harvard, Greece.

2nd Newsletter of the European Project “EuroNeurotrophin” funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017
The second «EuroNeurotrophin» Newsletter on the latest updates and innovations related to the project, is available. The «EuroNeurotrophin» project – is a European training network for the discovery of neurotrophins small molecule mimetics as potential therapeutic agents for neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation and is currently training 14 early-stage researchers (ESRs) to develop new ND treatments. Effects of Fungal Beta-Glucan on Health - A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
Doctoral candidate M. Vlassopoulou and Dr. V. Pletsa from the ICB/NHRF published the aforementioned review article in Food & Function journal, in collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens (G.Zervakis, Professor) and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of Harokopio University (Ass. Prof. A. Kyriacou and M. Yannakoulia). The article was developed in the framework of the implementation of the FUNglucan project (RESEARCH-CREATE-INNOVATE).

Adjusting the energy of interfacial states in organic photovoltaics for maximum efficiency
Dr. Christos Chochos (ICB/NHRF) participates in the aforementioned scientific paper published in Nature Communications and developed in collaboration with the most prestigious international universities. Conjugated polymer developed by the research team of Dr. Chistos Chochos and Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou at NHRF was combined with small organic molecules and led to the photophysical study of the decay of excitons at their interface in organic photovoltaic devices.

Research programme ''Immured Vessels in Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Ecclesiastical Monuments of Greece: An Online Corpus''
The main objectives of the research programme "Immured vessels in Byzantine and Post-Byzantine churches of Greece: An online corpus" are the location of the churches of Greece decorated with clay vessels on their façades, the recording of these objects, their analytical documentation and the preservation of the information collected through its registration in a database able to be used by all [https://immuredvessels.gr/en/].

The study of the philhellenic phenomenon was the main and most systematic scientific work of Loukia Droulia, which bore rich research fruits, such as books, articles and publications in the press. In the present study, which is part of her unpublished dissertation, the publishing phenomenon of philhellenism during the Greek War of Independence, is interpreted.

International Digital Conference "Nationalist Movements and Philhellenism"
The International Digital Conference entitled "Nationalist Movements and Philhellenism" was successfully held from 4 to 6 February 2021. The Conference implemented with the support of the Protovoulia '21 and devoted to the memory of Lukia Droulia examined in an interdisciplinary way the environment of other national movements and the brave philhellenic movement they triggered.

Dr. Marianna Kapetanou and Dr. Stathis Gonos (Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Ageing, ICB/NHRF), in collaboration with the Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Ageing (Cologne, Germany), Professor Linda Partridge, recently published the aforementioned work in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology.

Synthesis, biological evaluation and QSAR studies of new thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-one derivatives as antimicrobial and antifungal agents
The researchers of the ICB/NHRF: Theodora Calogeropoulou, Kyriakos Prousis, Panagiotis Zoumpoulakis and Niki Chondrogianni along with their colleagues: Georgios Magoulas, Lefkothea Kalopetridou, Eftychia Kritsi and Paraskevi Kouka, recently published the aforementioned study in the journal Bioorganic Chemistry, in the framework of their collaboration with researchers from the University of Belgrade, Institute of Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”.

The doctoral candidate S. Demisli, Dr. E. Mitsou, Dr. A. Xenakis, Dr. V. Pletsa, and Dr. V. Papadimitriou of the ICB/NHRF collaborated on the aforementioned study published in the Nanomaterials.

BRAF paradox breakers PLX8394, PLX7904 are more effective against BRAFV600Ε CRC cells compared with the BRAF inhibitor PLX4720 and shown by detailed pathway analysis
The ICB/NHRF researchers: Olga Papadodima, Vasilis Souliotis, Aristotelis Chatziioannou, Maria Zervou, Alexandros Pintzas, and their colleagues: Kassandra Koumaki, Georgia Kontogianni, Vivi Kosmidou, Eftyhia Kritsi, Fani Pachitsa, published the aforementioned study in the framework of their interdisciplinary collaboration in the Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) -Molecular Basis of Disease.

"RESEARCH - CREATE - INNOVATE" | OSTEOME
The kick-off meeting of the project OSTEOME was held by the ICB/NHRF on January 19. The project entitled "Design and development of a novel food supplement for osteoporosis based on gut microbiome mechanisms. Efficacy and tolerability assessment" is funded within the B cycle of the action RESEARCH - CREATE - INNOVATE.

Two awards of the Academy of Athens for the Institute of Historical Research
In 2020 the Institute of Historical Research received two awards of the Section of Letters and Fine Arts of the Academy of Athens for two of its publications. The Georgios P. Oeconomou award for a study devoted to the History and Archaeology of Macedonia, to Mrs Sophia Kremydi for her book «‘Autonomous’ Coinages under the Late Antigonids», Meletemata 79, (Athens 2018) and The Heleni and Panos Psimenos award for a study devoted to contemporary Greek History or Philology from 1669 onwards, to Mrs Eftychia Liata for her book «Rigged from the little we had... The frigade ship Timoleon during the Greek Revolution 1821», Historical Library of the 1821 Revolution no. 4, (Athens 2020).

Innovation-el is a national research infrastructure network comprised of leading Research Institutions and Universities in Greece. Its mission is to promote scientific excellence and the development of knowledge intensive products providing open-access to top-notch research facilities to academic and industrial users. The ultimate goal of Innovation-el is to evolve to a unique regional habitat for Research, Development and Innovation activities throughout Southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean Area. TPCI serves as an access-site within Innovation-el, offering facilities for material synthesis, growth, and processing, material and device characterization through several spectroscopic methods, laser processing of materials, and clusters for computational chemistry and physics.

"RESEARCH-CREATE-INNOVATE" project : CLOUDSCREEN
The National Hellenic Research Foundation currently participates in the research project CLOUDSCREEN that aims to develop a new generation "one-stop-shop- platform (CloudScreen) for drug repositioning and repurposing in precision medicine. Combining the reasoning skills of artificial and human intelligence, the platform empowers efficacy and toxicity prediction, evaluation, and validation for the repurposed drugs.

“EuroNeurotrophin” «A European training network for the discovery of neurotrophins small molecule mimetics as candidate therapeutic agents for neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation»
The EU-funded project EuroNeurotrophin, is the first European consortium to study small molecule neurotrophin mimetics in depth, and in order to progress their clinical translation will build the research capacity necessary for the development of novel candidate therapies. The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), Institute of Chemical Biology (ICB), coordinates “EuroNeurotrophin” under the supervision of ICB Research Director and Project Coordinator, Dr Theodora Calogeropoulou.
